Meet David

About David
David Field is a guitarist, vocalist, and musical storyteller based in Sebastopol, California. His journey traces back to Chicago’s South Side, where folk, blues, classical music, and avant-garde jazz shaped his musical foundation—a background that naturally evolved into rock, country, and R&B explorations.
David’s musical path has been wonderfully diverse. He’s played electric guitar in Grateful Dead tribute bands like Nine Mile Skid, released acclaimed albums with Americana duos Dead Set and Skiddles, and served as guitarist for the Sebastopol Love Choir. He was also the musical partner of singer-songwriter Kate Magdalena until her passing in 2022, supporting her celebrated work with Nashville producer Billy Smiley.
Over the decades, David has mastered the art of adapting his classical training to fingerstyle guitar, creating what listeners describe as “elegant, transparent music” and “wordless poetry.” His solo album Wordless Poetry features nineteen arrangements of contemporary classics and originals that have earned praise from William Ackerman, founder of Windham Hill Records, who noted David’s “genuine personal expression” and graceful playing. Fans describe the album as “soothing and energizing at the same time” and music that “opens up a place where my spirit can rest.”
Currently, David focuses on two distinct performance styles: contemplative solo fingerstyle guitar instrumentals and folk ballad performances with his duo partner Larry Weissenborn. His repertoire spans folk and pop classics from Kate Wolf, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Crosby Stills & Nash, and The Beatles, along with traditional folk songs and original compositions.
David performs regularly throughout Northern California at Cafe Frida, Sebastopol Farmers Market, restaurants, and community events. His relaxed but masterful guitar work and warm stage presence create intimate musical experiences that transcend the boundaries between performer and audience. As he describes it, each performance is “a brief, intense meeting” that flourishes in the memory of melodies and connection long after the last note fades.
You can find David’s music on BandCamp, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon, and wherever digital music is streamed.
